To Rest or Not to Rest After an Achilles Tendon Rupture: What's the Latest?

Writer: Peter AhnPeter Ahn

It is quite a bit of a traumatic injury when you rupture a muscle tendon such as #AchillesTendon. What do we do once we rupture it? Rest? Medication?

[WE NEED TO MOBILISE AND ACTIVELY MANAGE IT]

Here are 5 reasons why early mobilization matters:

  1. Exposure to load improves the tendon structure

  2. Increased physical activity gives larger and stronger tendon callus in a shorter time frame

  3. Higher physical activity is associated with a more mature tissue repair

  4. Early rehab and mobilization = less risk of re-rupture

  5. Early rehab and mobilization = less tendon elongation
